GENERAL INFORMATION:
NC Association of Local Health Directors’ (NCALHD) Region 7 is accepting applications for a Communications Intern under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Public Health Workforce Initiative. NCALHD Region 7 consists of Granville, Vance, Warren, Franklin, Wake, Nash, Wilson, and Johnston counties.
This position will serve as a Communications Intern for public health workforce development with a special focus on opioid use disorder prevention and response and the rural academic health department model. The internship is intended to provide the selected candidate with exposure to local health departments (LHDs) and university support for health department programs. The work products from the internship will improve Region 7 foundational capabilities in public health, including community partnership development, policy development and support, communications and health equity.
This position will be hired through the North Carolina Alliance for Public Health Agencies (Alliance). This is currently a time-limited position, expected to take approximately 360 hours to complete from May 22, 2023 through August 04, 2023.
POSITION LOCATION:
The Communications Intern can work virtually and attend in-person meetings as needed. The intern will report to the Region 7 ARPA Workforce Development Director, located at Granville Vance District Health Department, while collaborating with LHD staff and UNC Gillings School of Public Health Communications Fellows.
Initial meetings with the Alliance and Granville Vance District Health Department staff are required for on-boarding and orientation. Virtual and in-person meetings to support the seven LHDs across Region 7 are expected. Occasional travel to UNC Gillings School of Public Health may be required. Travel will be reimbursed.
POSITION HOURS:
The Communications Intern will work no more than 40 hours per week.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The primary purpose of this position is to support Region 7 LHDs by improving Internet-based communications within the following programs:
- Opioid Use Disorder Resources for Communities
- Work across Region 7 LHDs to determine mental health and substance abuse treatment services to be included in Internet-based platform for each county.
- Work with UNC Gillings School of Public Health to design an easy to navigate and use platform.
- Maintain and update data to ensure accuracy and efficacy of links.
- Rural Academic Health Department Resources
- Using GVPH as a model, develop an Internet page to highlight the academic work completed, ongoing and planned across LHD programs.
- Work with Gillings School of Public Health to ensure information is geared towards an audience of academics, federal and state agencies, elected/appointed officials and funding entities.
- Included materials or links are envisioned to include presentations, posters, manuscripts and chapters/papers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The preferred candidate will have:
- Knowledge of and experience in local public health, including opioid use disorder and treatment and academic health department models.
- Experience in the collection, aggregation, and reporting of local health department and/or agency/program data.
- Experience with data display and visualization in online platforms.
- Ability to plan and implement data collection efforts.
- Ability to effectively communicate across sectors, and collaborate to achieve shared goals and objectives.
REQUIRED MINIMUM TRAINING and EXPERIENCE: Registered student in good standing at an accredited four-year degree program at a North Carolina university or college.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: The preferred candidate will be majoring in public health, health sciences, or another relevant field of study. In addition, the preferred client will have some applicable experience in public health.
COMPENSATION:
This is an hourly position starting at $22 hourly.Travel will be reimbursed at the current Federal mileage rate.
