COVID-19 Vaccinator and Surge Staff

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide essential support for COVID-19 vaccinations.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; with one hour for lunch.  There may be after hours and weekend work if necessary for program related events. 

Organizational Relationship

This is a contract position hired through the NC Alliance for Public Health Agencies.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Determine clinical suitability for vaccination, including identifying any contraindications
  2. Obtain and document informed consent from patients
  3. Administer the COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with training protocols
  4. Document vaccine administration in the North Carolina Immunization Registry
  5. Providing after-care including follow-up appointment and adverse event advice to patients
  6. Answer patient questions within scope of training and qualifications
  7. Preparing vaccine doses for administration by reconstituting and drawing up doses from multi-dose vials
  8. Familiarize self with all clinic electronic forms, vaccine administration protocols, vaccines, and follow-up information to be given to patients
  9. Provide administrative and supportive roles to the vaccination team
  10. Adhere to infection control procedures
  11. Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of vaccine administration methods
  • Ability to administer vaccine
  • Knowledge of available COVID-19 vaccines and immunization schedules
  • Ability to perform vaccination methods with minimal assistance
  • Ability to operate efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume mass vaccination clinic
  • Ability to understand and adhere to clinic operation protocols and plans
  • Ability to build trust/rapport with children and parents/caregivers
  • Ability to listen, observe, communicate, understand, build trust with staff and the public
  • Ability to work in a proactive team environment in a position that requires a high level of accountability.

  • Ability to follow policies and procedures

Required Minimum Training:

  • Qualified to administer vaccine under state law.
  • Intramuscular injection training and proficiency check off.
  • Anaphylaxis and Adverse reactions training.
  • Documentation of IM injection, product selection, consent, and administration and follow-up in patient medical record.
  • Competency to be verified by Director of Nursing or designee regarding Immunization Administration practices

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

  • One of the Following: RN, LPN, Certified Nurse Aide II, or Medical Office Assistant
  • Must maintain a valid, unrestricted NC driver’s license.
