General Definition of Work

The primary purpose of this position is to provide medical examinations, diagnosis, and a plan of care for maternity patients who receive prenatal care at the Health Department.The physician will :medically supervise delivery of care for maternity patients within the clinic setting, provide evaluation of patients referred by the Expanded Role Nurses, consult with Obstetricians regarding high-risk patients, refer patients to Obstetricians as well as other physicians in the area, review and sign standing orders and protocols for the clinic on an annual basis. This position reports directly to the Director of Nursing and/or Medical Director.The normal work schedule includes up to 2 days/week from 8-5p.

                        Essential Functions

 

  1. The Physician is responsible for reviewing the prenatal patients' medical history, performing ‘physical examinations, establishing a diagnosis, and formulating a maternal care plan.
  2. Unscheduled maternity patients with acute medical complaints and/or symptoms are evaluated and treated as needed.
  3. The Physician performs cervical examinations on all low-risk patients to detect cervical changes that might herald pre-term labor.\
  4. Ultrasound studies are performed to determine fetal age, adequacy of amnionic fluid and biophysical profiles.
  5. Non-stress tests are evaluated for indicators of fetal distress.
  6. Third trimester examinations are performed: a) to determine fetal presentation (b) to test for various infections (or carrier states) including Group B Strep, and (c) to evaluate arid monitor post-dates to assure fetal well-being with scheduled delivery by 42 weeks gestation.
  7. Consultation is provided to the Maternity charge Nurse and other Maternity nurses regarding individual patient problems and the best way to resolve problems. A plan of care is decided upon which is discussed with the patient and clinic staff to assure understanding and compliance.
  8. Physician provides assistance to Maternity Clinic Charge Nurse in responding to calls from patients who are having a problem (bleeding, no fetal movement, etc) or seeing the patient if circumstances warrant.
  9. Consultation regarding 'best plan of care' and at times, patient referral, occurs with Obstetricians at the Shelby Women's Clinic, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, as well as with physicians in other specialties.
  10. Remain in alignment with State, federal and all regulations as outlined by North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have the knowledge, skill, and ability to provide prenatal care; preventive and Rehabilitative health care in a Health Department setting and to provide consultation with other healthcare professionals.

 

Education and Experience

An M.D. Degree with licensure is a minimal requirement. Additional training and Board Certification in a specialty is desirable.

 

This position is a part of a Health and Human Services Department. By General Statue 166A-19.3, Departments of Health and Human Services are agencies that are a part of the State Emergency Response Team for occurrences or imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property resulting from any natural or man-made accidental, military, paramilitary, terrorism, weather-related, public health, explosion-related, riot-related cause, or technological failure or accident, including, but not limited to, a cyber incident, an explosion, a transportation accident, a radiological accident, or a chemical or other hazardous material incident. In the event that the State Emergency Response Team is activated, this position will be required to participate if deemed necessary.
