POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Health Educator II provides consultative and administrative work for the Health Education Division as well as health education services directly to the populations in need.
 
This position carries out evidence-based health educational programs assigned by the Health Education supervisor, with and through local health department staff, to promote citizens’ health and well-being. This position’s emphasis is on improving Cumberland County family planning to include contraceptive counseling, reproductive life planning, teen wellness and general sexual health.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
 
• Assists Health Education Supervisor and local health department staff to address the health priorities identified in the Cumberland County Community Health Assessment to promote health and wellness within the Cumberland County community.
• Identify educational needs, initiate community problem-solving, design, recommend and implement health education and prevention strategies.
• Complete training in selected evidence-based health promotion programming.
• Assist schools, community organizations, professional groups, and internal local health education program with community on nutrition, chronic diseases, maternal and child health, unplanned pregnancy and STD/HIV prevention, health promotion and the health topics based on best practices promoted with the Cumberland County Department of Public Health including Cumberland County Juvenile and Adult Detention Centers.
• Assess indicators and results of programs designed to address the health priorities as determined in the Community Health Assessment and community action plans, with emphasis on promoting positive behavior changes for disease prevention.
• Conduct health education programs and community events with community partners.
• Coordinate Childbirth Education for the Women's Health Clinic.
• Serve as a resource person to school nurses, health and physical education teachers, vocational education teachers and guidance counselors.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A master’s degree in public health education or in public health with a major in public health education; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education and two years’ experience in public health education or a related field; or graduation from a four-year college or university and three years’ experience in public health education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
 
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCE:
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES); LAMAZE training or equivalent certification
 
Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.
