Resident Leader/Community Liaison Job description

Pay – 25 hours a week, $18/hour

In July 2020, Cumberland County was awarded a two-year grant to participate in the Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge. The aim of the grant is to implement policy, systems, and environmental changes in U.S. cities and counties.

The Cumberland County project will focus on reducing adult and childhood obesity by improving access to healthy foods in Cumberland County (CC) and Ft. Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world. The first year, the project team will partner with residents that live and work in food desert areas as well as relevant agencies to collect community level data to understand food insecurity and access to healthy foods. In addition, the team will work to establish a food policy council. Partnering with the community and agencies, this information will be used to identify potential solutions. The second year will focus on implementation in collaboration with residents and partner organizations throughout the county.


Job duties

-        Engage with residents using a variety of virtual and in-person strategies (listening sessions/town halls, small group meetings, one-on-one meetings, etc.) to identify community assets and needs related to food insecurity and food access

-        Assist the project team with data collection by partnering with residents on focus groups, surveys, and mapping

-        Contribute to the development of a Cumberland County Food System Assessment based on feedback and data collected with residents

-        Develop and implement strategies to reduce food insecurity and improve access to healthy foods with a focus on equity and making policy, systems, and environmental change

-        Assist with the establishment of a Cumberland County-Ft. Bragg Food Policy Council

-        Assist in facilitating meetings (virtual and/or in-person) with the project team and residents

-        Assist the Project Manager with writing grant reports and project plans

-        Administrative tasks (ordering food, setting up meetings, developing agendas, taking meeting minutes, etc.)


-        A resident of Cumberland County and/or Ft. Bragg

-        Knowledge and experience in addressing issues of food insecurity and food access in Cumberland County

-        Knowledge of Cumberland County demographics, assets, and needs

-        Knowledge of health disparities as it relates to food insecurity and food access

-        Experience in engaging residents in advocacy and support around community initiatives  

-        Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally including facilitating groups and delivering community presentations

-        High school diploma/GED required. Some college preferred. One year of community-based experience providing advocacy and support which has included significant public contact
