Position Description

Schedule:  Monday - Thursday and Friday as needed

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Responsibilites

Assists the pediatric dental clinic in reception duties and providing education and prevention of dental disease.  An employee in this class provides reception duties in the pediatric dental clinic. Work involves scheduling appointments, readying charts, filing and general clerical duties.  Employees in this class also provide chair side assistance to the Dentist position. Work involves all types of clinical dental procedures.  Employee will assist the Dentist in educating and providing information on prevention of dental disease to the public. Work is performed under general supervision of the Dentist.  

  • Provides chair side assistance to the Dentist in all types of clinical dental procedures – examinations, prophylaxis (cleaning), fluoride treatments, restorations (fillings), sealants, and simple extractions.   
  • Ensures infection control procedures to minimize possible disease transmission from patient to patient; patient to doctor; and patient to dental assistant, including: cleaning dental instruments, sterilization of instruments, disinfection of surfaces and non-sterilizable items, appropriate barrier techniques – gloves, masks, and eyewear; and operatory cleanliness – sweep floors, garbage disposal, etc.
  • Provides reception duties such as: scheduling appointments, getting charts ready, filing, patient record files, local reports, letters, ordering supplies.
  • Responsible for seeing that third party billing is carried out for all eligible individual patients.
 Additional Job Duties
            Performs related duties as required.
 
  • Considerable knowledge of dental equipment, instruments, and procedures. 
  • Considerable knowledge of dental office business procedures. 
  • Considerable knowledge of preparation methods and dental materials. 
  • Ability to maintain records, inventories, and patient histories.  Ability to deal tactfully with patients. 
  • Ability to observe, evaluate, and report required information pertaining to a dental or dental assistant student. 
  • Ability to orient dental and dental assistant students, other health care personnel and patients.

Required Minimum Education / Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED is required; and
  • Graduation from an accredited dental assisting program; or 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equivalent Education, Training, and Experience
Full time employment as a chair side assistant (Dental Assistant I) by a dentist licensed in NC for three consecutive years of the preceding five, completion of a Board approved course intraoral radiography, and completion of didactic training in a dental assisting course approved by Board that must include asepsis and dental emergencies.
Successful completion of the certification examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board and completion of a formal educational program in radiography (which includes an examination) consisting of at least 40 clock hours; and completion of equivalent training and experience as approved by the Board.  An assistant may submit qualifications (evidence of education, training, and work experience) to the Board for its consideration provided that proof of the required 40 clock hour radiography course is included.  Requests are considered by the Board during regular meetings, which occur monthly.
