Description: This position performs professional environmental health work in the promotion of public health education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of state, local, and federal environmental health laws and regulations in the On-site Wastewater, Drinking Water Wells, Tattooing and Public Swimming Pool programs. Primary job duties include site and soil evaluations of undeveloped property for on-site wastewater systems and wells; evaluation and inspection of existing on-site wastewater systems and drinking water wells; issuance of on-site wastewater permits, drinking water well permits, tattoo permits, public swimming pool permits; inspections of on-site wastewater system installations, drinking water well installations, tattoo artist, and public swimming pools.
Requirements: Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences and two years of exposure in environmental health; OR a four-year or Master’s degree in environmental health from a program which is accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one year ofexperience in environmental Health. All health department employees (with the exception of individuals with an accommodation or medical exemption) are required to receive an annual flu vaccine as a condition of employment. An appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of NC is required and must be maintained. Applicants must be eligible to become registered as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Environmental Health Intern with the NC State Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialist Examiners.
Compensation: The hiring range for this position is $36,298 - $58,923. Halifax County provides a comprehensive employee benefits package, including membership in the N.C. Local Government Employees’ RetirementSystem. A fully qualified Environmental Health Specialist will have a starting salary of $ 43,732 or higher, based on additional education and/or experience.
Signing and A non-refundable signing bonus in the amount of $7,500 will be paid in the selected applicant’s first
Retention Bonus: paycheck following employment and execution of the Employment Signing and Retention Bonus Agreement.
A retention bonus in the amount of $7,500 will be paid in the selected applicant’s next paycheck following the completion of 12 full months of employment in the same position with the County following the date of payment of the signing bonus.
